LTCSWND was established in August 1979.  The purpose of the organization is:

  • to cooperate in the development of the role of the social worker in long term care
  • provide support and materials to professionals delivering social services in long term care
  • promote cooperation and understanding with those serving the aging population
  • to further interpret the social work role for other professionals through planning and participating in conferences, conventions, and other educational programs
  • to further pursue the development of understanding of present and future needs of the aging and disabled in long term care through advocacy and liaison with social work educators and planners

Long term care means a full continuum of options from minimal support service to extensive care; examples include but not limited to:  home assistive services, home health services, basic care, swing bed care, assisted living , nursing home care, subacute care, acute geriatric and psychogeriatic care.

Members are individuals who are currently licensed as social workers in North Dakota, or practicing as a Social Work Designee who are currently providing social services in the long term care continuum or any social workers/designees who wish to maintain an association with the organization.

For purposes of our organization, the state has been divided into four geographical regions.  Each region has its own Regional Representative who is a member of the Executive Board.  Members in each region meet at least two times a year for a business meeting as well as educational session.  Continuing education hours are available for those participating in these sessions.  Members within a region serve as a network and support system to each other.

  • To cooperate in the on-going definition and development of the role of the social worker in the long term care facility.
  • To provide consultation, mutual support and resource materials to professionals delivering social services in long term care facilities.
  • To promote cooperation and understanding among long term care facilities and with other resources serving the aging and disabled.
  • To interpret the social work role in the long term care setting to other professionals through planning and participating in conferences, conventions and other educational programs.
  • To develop a liaison with social work educators and planners for the aging and disabled, to interpret the role of the social worker and the needs of the aging and disabled in long term care facilities.
  • To represent the needs of the aging and disabled in long term care facilities and the role of the social worker to state regulating agencies and public policy makers.
